INTRODUCTION
In the year 1963 a
small vigilance unit was established under a Dy.SP of A & N Police assisted
by 2 Inspectors, 2 Sub-Inspectors , 1 Assistant Sub-Inspectors, 2 Head Constables
and 2 Constables under the A & N Administration. This unit was entrusted with
task of conducting enquires into the complaints on the vigilance angle/
corruption against erring govt. servants of A & N Administration. The Unit
was manned by drawing police officers from A & N Police on transfer without
any extra remuneration.
In
the year 1975 the Chief secretary of A & N Administration was designated as
chief vigilance Officer by the Government of India. There has been a regular growth of departmental activities during the last 3
decades and similarly manpower under the Administration has also increased
tremendously.
The Anti-Corruption Unit of the
A&N
Islands
has been functioning as a Police Station since 28.3.2000 with jurisdiction over
the whole of the
Union
Territory
of
A&N
Islands
in respect of the offences under the prevention of corruption Act 1988.
Likewise, the sessions Judge of the
A&N
Islands
has been appointed as the special Judge for the whole of the territory of
A&N
Islands
to try offences under the relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption
Act 1988.
The Vigilance Organization of the Administration functions under the
control of Chief Vigilance Officer/Chief Secretary.
