To
most Indians, the memory of the penal settlement is associated with its Cellular
Jail. For, within its solitary cells the freedom fighters were engaged in a
long, arduous and bitter struggle for freedom.
The advent of the twentieth Century saw intensification in the struggle against
foreign rule. When the flames of freedom light up the hearts and souls of the
people, how long can they be stopped? It was during this phase that a new breed
of prisoners set foot in the Cellular Jail- -the revolutionary Freedom Fighters
or the Political Prisoners.
Many charismatic personalities were imprisoned in this Jail. Savarkar brothers,
Hotilal Verma, Babu Ram Hari, Pandit Permanand, Ladha Ram, Ullaskar Dutt,
Barindra Kumar Ghosh, Bhai Permanand, Indu Bhushan Roy, Prithvi Singh Azad,
Pulin Das, Trailokyanath Chakravarthy, Gurumukh Singh and many more. The
catalogue is long and distinguished. Groups of revolutionaries involved in
Alipore Bomb case, Nasik Conspiracy case, Lahore Conspiracy case, Chittagoan
Armoury Raid case, Inter-Provincial conspiracy case, Gaya Conspiracy case etc.
were brought to the Cellular Jail on long terms of imprisonment.
