Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is the only Municipal Town in this union Territory. The Port Blair Municipal was constituted on 2nd Oct, 1957 and its main functions were to provide for sanitation, lighting and maintaining Public street, road drains, tanks, prevention of nuisance and improving the town in all manner.

Port Blair Municipal Council having three Sub-Division which is located at Anarkali near Amphitheater. Shadipur Near OHT and Brookshabad. This Sub Division is headed by the Superintending Engineer supported by Executive Engineer (Wks), Assistant Engineer and Junior Engineer. This Sub Division is involved in the construction, executions and maintenance of footpath, Side drain ,major drains, Retaining wall, Parks, Parking place, Shopping Complexes and other civic amenities depending on the availability of funds and as per the sanctioned estimates of works.

Advertisement by means of banners, hoardings, directional/sign boards are permitted under PBMC Advertisement Byelaws, 1999 framed U/S 80 (i) of Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Municipal) Regulation, 1994.

Port Blair Municipal Council has a prime responsibility to distribute potable water to the consumers of Municipal area comprising 18 wards, APWD Suppliers the filtered water to the command tank of Municipal Council for distribution. Approximately 124 km length of distribution net work of GI & CI/DI is there for the purpose.

The Building Cell Department in PBMC is headed Executive Engineer supported by the Building Oficial and Building Inspector. This Department deals with building plans approval/layout and other permissions, removal/demolition of unauthorized constructions.

The Port Blair Municipal Council has endeavored to bring about a massive change in the environment and in the people's attitude towards it. Reviving the erstwhile beauty of the city is one part for which the reponsibilities entrusted to the Horticulture wing.
