LG calls for fuller exploitation of isles

renewable energy potential

The Lt. Governor, Lt. Gen. A K Singh (Retd.) made a fervent appeal to the people to make judicious use of electricity here in the greater public interest. Addressing the day-long workshop on renewable energy sources potential as the chief guest in the DBRAIT auditorium here this morning, he noted with concern that the power generation through renewable sources of energy in the islands is merely 7 percent whereas the islands have great potential in this sector. This, he said, can be augmented to a high level, if it is exploited in the right earnest and the efforts are intensified in this direction.

The Workshop was jointly organised by BEE, TERI & NRSE Division of Electricity Department of A & N Administration. Among others the workshop was graced by a number of dignitaries, including the Chief Secretary, A & N Islands, Shri Anand Prakash, the Special Secretary, Ministry of Power, GoI, Shri Devendra Chowdhury, Joint Secretary, MNRE, Ms. Varsha Joshi and the Chairperson (SWB), Smt Ratna Kannan.

The Lt. Governor observed that the technology with regard to power generation even in respect of renewable energy sources is moving fast and cited the manner in which such technologies can be adopted in our islands for tapping renewable energy at least to meet 50% requirement of electricity. He cited the example of Puducherry, where under a project, the use of LED bulbs has been introduced in place of lamps in order to save energy as well as reducing the cost of production of electricity. He said now street light can be controlled in a computer room and accordingly illumination can be reduced late night. A study in this regard has already been made. The Lt. Governor asked the Chief Secretary to look into this issue for making the project a reality. The Lt. Governor wanted the officials to ensure that different projects under renewable energy sources are executed in an expeditious manner.

Complementing the Electricity Department for providing almost an uninterrupted power supply, the Lt. Governor said that 96% of our population have electricity, 86% of whom enjoy round the clock power. He appreciated that Electricity Department has to work in a very challenging circumstances including hilly terrain and hamlets and in far flung areas.

On the issue of energy saving, the Lt. Governor minced no words and warned that we cannot afford waste electricity as this is supplied at a highly subsidized rate. He said that power produced at about Rs. 25 per unit in the islands is supplied to the consumers at a mere Rs. 5 per unit. He cited the example of Raj Niwas, where 23% energy saving has been affected during the last year. He also exhorted officials to be cautious about the use of electricity in the Govt. offices and asked the Secretary (Power) to keep a tab. “We should bring down the consumption of electricity in the government building”, the Lt. Governor cautioned.

Describing the workshop as very important for the Islands, the Lt Governor expressed the hope that the deliberations would be immensely beneficial to the people of these islands.
