Warm welcome awaits Vice President

on his arrival to A&N Islands today

 

          Port Blair, Jan 09: A rousing welcome awaits the Vice President of India, Shri Mohammad Hamid Ansari who will be arriving here on a four day visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands tomorrow afternoon (Jan 10, 2015). The Vice President and Smt. Salma Ansari will be received by the Lt. Governor, Lt. Gen. A.K. Singh (Retd), PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, the First Lady of the Islands, Smt. Suneeti Singh, Member of Parliament, Shri Bishnu Pada Ray and senior officers of the Administration and the Andaman Nicobar Command. Soon after his arrival, the Vice President will visit the National Memorial Cellular Jail and lay a wreath at the Martyrs’ Column there.

 

          The Vice President will also visit the Andaman and Nicobar Tribal Research Institute (ANTRI) at 1200 hrs on Jan 11, 2015 where he will be briefed on Tribal issues. In the evening, the Vice President will attend a ‘Civic Reception’, to be hosted by the Port Blair Municipal Council in his honour at the DBRAIT auditorium.

 

        On Jan 12, the Vice President is scheduled to visit Ross Island in the morning. Thereafter, he will visit the Andaman and Nicobar Command Headquarters where the Commander in Chief, ANC will brief him. In the evening of Jan12, the Vice President is scheduled to visit the famous tourist destination of Havelock Islands.

 

        On Jan 13, the Vice President will go to Car Nicobar where he will visit the Tsunami Memorials at the Air Force Station and Big Lapathy and lay wreaths there. The Vice President will also hold interactions with the members of the Tribal Council and witness a cultural programme at Passa Beach. The Vice President will depart for the mainland in the afternoon of Jan 13, 2015.

 

        Meanwhile, preparations are in full swing here and elsewhere in the islands for the visit of the Vice President of India. Welcome arches have been erected in honour of the Vice President at vantage points in the city. Security of the Islands has also been geared up in view of the VVIP visit.

Mohammad Hamid Ansari-

the Vice President of India 

   Shri Mohammad Hamid Ansari, was born to Shri Mohammad Abdul Aziz Ansari and Smt. Aasiya Begum on April 1, 1937. An Indian diplomat, politician, writer and the Vice President of India, Shri Ansari entered the Indian Foreign Service in 1961, where he served for nearly four decades. After postings to several countries over some 15 years (Iraq, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Belgium), Shri Ansari was named Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (1976–79). He also served as Ambassador to Afghanistan (1989–90), Iran (1990–92), and Saudi Arabia (1995–99), as well as High Commissioner to Australia (1985–89) and permanent representative to the United Nations (1993–95). In between those foreign postings, he was the chief of protocol for the Indian government in 1980–85.

 

   Upon his retirement from the Foreign Service, Shri Ansari was named to academic positions, including vice chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (2000–02) and visiting professor at two New Delhi schools—Jawaharlal Nehru University (1999–2000) and Jamia Millia Islamia (2003–05). He also worked for a private think tank and served on several government commissions and committees.

 

  Shri Ansari became the Vice President of India on 11th August, 2007 and was re-elected as Vice President of India on 11th August, 2012.

 

   With his many years of diplomatic postings in the Middle East, Shri Ansari developed a reputation as a scholar of that region. He wrote in particular on the Palestinian issue. He is the author of ‘Travelling Through Conflict: Essays on the Politics of West Asia’ (2008) and the editor of ‘Iran Today: Twenty Five Years After the Islamic Revolution’ (2005).Shri Ansari was awarded with Padmashree in 1984.

        Port Blair, January, 09: The captivating, serene and green lawns of the Raj Niwas had a profound effect on the young scholarly minds who were on an exposure visit to Port Blair. These final year B.A (Political Science) students from the Mahatma Gandhi Govt College, Mayabunder were extremely elated to be in Raj Niwas. In chorus, they expressed their gratitude to the Lt Governor for providing them this opportunity to visit the place.

 

        For the students, meeting the Hon’ble Lt Governor of A&N Islands was like a dream come true. Pooja Chandra, a student of the college narrated that it was a unique opportunity for her to visit Raj Niwas. A jubilant Elango G. said that this trip to Raj Niwas was educative and motivating.

 

        Interacting with the students, the Hon’ble Lt Governor, Lt Gen. A. K Singh (Retd) enquired from them about their academic plans and careers. He advised them to be more confident and work on their communication skills for developing their personalities. The Lt Governor also blessed the students for a bright future.

 

        The students also had a chance meeting with Air Marshal PP Reddy, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee who is currently on visit to the islands and was also present at Raj Niwas at that time.

            All tourists, tourist boat operators and other tourism service providers are hereby informed that in view of impending VVIP visit, there will be no boat operations and water sports activities from Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex to Ross Island and North Bay during the forenoon of 12.01.2015 (upto 01.00 PM). All boat operators and water sports operators operating from Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex, Port Blair have been instructed to shift their boats to Junglighat Jetty by 11.01.2015 positively.
