Vice President visits A&N Tribal Research and Training Institute

Appreciates Administration’s initiatives

for the welfare of native Islanders

 

 

 

        Port Blair, Jan, 11: The Vice President of India, Shri Hamid Ansari visited the A&N Tribal Research and Training Institute (ANTRI) today. The young students belonging to the Andamanese tribe welcomed the Vice President at his arrival at ANTRI. The Lt. Governor, Lt. General A.K Singh, PVSM, AVSM, SM & VSM, (Retd), The Chief Secretary, Shri Anand Prakash, DGP, Shri Sudhir Yadav and senior officers of A&N Administration were present on the occasion. 

    

          Soon after his arrival at ANTRI, the Vice President of India was shown around the library and the museum of the ANTRI by its Honorary Director. The Vice President appreciated the efforts made by the A&N Administration in furthering the cause of tribes on the isles.

 

        Later the Vice President and his entourage were shown a film wherein it was depicted how the tribals of these islands want their culture and tradition to be showcased to the ‘outside’ world in their own voices, through their own interpretation.

 

        The Lt. Governor apprised the Vice President of the issues being faced by the tribals.  He emphasized the importance of inclusive approach while taking policy initiatives keeping in view the best interest of the tribes, with help of experts who interact with them. He recalled that ANTRI was formally inaugurated by President of India exactly one year back i.e. on 12th January, 2014 to start the process of consultation with the tribal communities. He mentioned how a national conference was conducted at Port Blair to bring in experts from various fields to deliberate on the future of these tribal communities.

 

        A presentation was made by the Honorary Director of ANTRI that traced the historical interface between the tribals and the British colony, how the Andaman Adim Janjati Vikas Samiti came into being, followed by the ANTRI and present initiatives like bicultural-bilingual “Ang Katha” project that was launched recently.

 

        The Vice President was immensely impressed by the recent initiatives taken for the welfare of the native islanders and wished the Andaman and Nicobar Administration and the ANTRI all success.

 

        The Secretary (Tribal Welfare), Shri G. Theva Neethi Dhas proposed the vote of thanks at the end of the programme. Gifts made by the tribals were presented to the Vice President of India as a token of love for consenting to visit ANTRI. Vice President extols multi-cultural,

multi-linguistic society of A&N Islands

 

 

 

          Port Blair, Jan 11: The beautiful territory of Andaman & Nicobar Island truly exemplifies ‘unity in diversity’ and represents a ‘Mini India’ with people from various parts of the country as also our indigenous tribes living here in perfect harmony, said the Vice President of India, Shri M. Hamid Ansari while addressing a huge assemblage of people at DBRAIT auditorium. In honour of the visiting Vice President of India, the Port Blair Municipal Council organised a ‘Civic Reception’ at DBRAIT auditorium here this evening. Smt. Salma Ansari and the First Lady of the Islands, Smt. Suneeti Singh also graced the occasion. 

 

          Praising the unique cohesive multi cultural and multi linguistic society of these islands where all are living in harmony, the Vice President said, “these Islands set an example for the rest of the country to achieve our cherished goal of true national integration”.

 

        The Vice President also acknowledged the special place, the A&N Islands occupy in the 21st Century, which will further develop as South East Asia and East Asia grows. The Islands are also important as around one third of India’s exclusively economic zone lies in this area.  It is also very close to one of the busiest international sea routes, he said.

 

        Speaking about his visit, the Vice President said, he came to see the place where the national flag was hoisted first by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, where freedom fighters sacrificed their lives so that we can breathe in the air of a free country.

 

        Referring to the uniqueness of these islands, which is its environment, the Vice President advised to take into consideration the very fragile ecology of the Isles while planning for development. “Creating an environment takes hundreds of years, hence not only the Administration but also all the people must take care to preserve this unique environment”, the Vice President said.

 

        The Vice President also advised that the interest of the indigenous tribes of this land should be kept at the fore while formulating policies. Referring to his ANTRI visit, the Vice President said “I am assured of the Administration’s effort in looking after the well being of the tribes of these Islands”.

 

        Welcoming the Vice President, the Lt. Governor, A&N Islands, Lt. Gen A.K. Singh, PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM (Retd) remarked that the Islands are an integral part of the country’s history and heritage and are closely associated with the struggle of India’s independence.

 

        Turning to the harmonious blend of people from different religious and linguistic backgrounds, the Lt Governor mentioned that the A&N Islands are a true ‘Mini India’ which was rightly reflected in the cultural programme presented before the audience during the programme. He complimented the artists and said that the younger generation works with hope of success: their mantra being- “I can, I shall and I will.

 

        The Lt. Governor also informed the gathering about the illustrious career of the Vice President, Shri Hamid Ansari. He is not only known in the country but to the world outside as a visionary scholar, he said.

 

        The Lt. Governor also expressed his gratitude towards the Member of Parliament, Shri Bishnu Pada Ray for his constant guidance and expressed hope that the coordinated efforts between MP, PRIs and the Administration will produce best results for the development of the Islands. “Cooperative and coordinated efforts of all people in positions of authority will take the islands on the path of growth”, he said.

 

        The Lt. Governor reiterated his commitment towards preparing the islands for the future. “The Administration has ordered a study about steps that need to be taken in converting the A&N Islands from an Outpost to a springboard for our ‘Look East -Act East Policy’.

 

        He also informed about the programmes of the govt. being implemented in the islands viz Swachch Bharat; Adarsh Saansad Gram Yojana & Jan Dhan Yojana. Make in India and Digital India are also being vigorously pursued in the Islands. He also said that the Islands are ready to become a smart city for which a case has been taken up with the Central Govt.

 

        In his address, the Member of Parliament, Shri Bishnu Pada Ray expressed his gratitude towards the Vice President of India for visiting these islands. He further said that the word secular enshrined in the constitution is being followed in letter and spirit in these Islands. The MP also appreciated the cultural programme presented on the occasion which mirrored the harmonious blend of our society here. He further stated that under the able leadership of the Lt. Governor, Lt. Gen A.K. Singh, these islands are marching towards progress.

 

        Among others, the function was also graced by the Chief Secretary, Shri Anand Prakash, the Adhyaksha, Zilla Parishad, South Andaman, Ms. V.K. Mariam Bibi, the Chairperson, SSWB, Smt. Ratna Kannan and Senior Officers of the Administration. 

 

        Earlier, the Chairperson, Port Blair Municipal Council, Shri M. Arumugam welcomed the Vice President of India, Shri M. Hamid Ansari on this memorable occasion. He also presented a scroll and memento to the Vice President on the occasion.

 

        The ‘Civic Reception’ concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Sr. Vice Chairperson, PBMC, Shri Mahinder Prasad.

Hon’ble Vice President briefed by Lt. Governor

Stresses on sustainable and inclusive growth of the Islands

 

 

 

          Port Blair, Jan 11: A power point presentation highlighting the geographical features, the positive attributes, the challenges and the strategic location of the A&N Islands was made to the Hon’ble Vice President of India by the Lt. Governor, Lt. Gen A.K Singh (Retd) today in the Conference Hall of Raj Niwas.

 

        During the presentation, the Lt. Governor explained his vision for a sustainable and inclusive development of the islands keeping the ecological concerns and tribal issues to the fore.

        He brought out the positive attributes of these islands, in particular, the unique multi-cultural and multi-linguistic society where people live  in great cohesive, racial and religious harmony, besides the rich natural resources, both marine and forest. He also mentioned the challenges faced by the Administration and the people of the Islands, where most material requirement has to be brought in from the mainland. He further explained to the Hon’ble Vice President the elaborate plans drawn up by the Administration for modernisation of shipping fleet as well as the major steps taken on Civil Aviation front, such as operation of charter flights from Port Blair to Car Nicobar and Port Blair to Chennai.

 

        One of the important highlights of the presentation was the setting up of the medical college which is coming up in July, 2015. He also informed of the new degree college-ANCOL.

 

        The huge potential in tourism and fisheries was also highlighted.

 

        The Hon’ble Vice President took a keen interest in all the issues that were presented and thanked the Lt. Governor and other senior officers present for this highly educative presentation.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Canine lovers throng ITF show

Smti Salma Ansari inaugurates ‘Dog Show’ at ITF

 

 

 

          Port Blair, Jan 11: As part of the ongoing Island Tourism Festival, the Directorate of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services organized a ‘Dog Show’ at ITF ground here today. Smti Salma Ansari, wife of the Vice President of India, Shri Hamid Ansari was the chief guest on the occasion and declared the show open. Smti Suneeti Singh, the First Lady of the Islands was the guest of honour on the occasion.

 

          An ardent dog lover and the proud owner of many dogs, First Lady, Smti Suneeti Singh, while addressing the participants after the show, expressed her happiness that A&N Islands has so many dog lovers. The First Lady also enlightened the participants on how to care for their pets and gave a few tips as well.

 

       Altogether 33 owners, along with their dogs, participated in the show. The show was divided into two categories i.e. Large Pet and Small Pet Categories (exotic breed only). In the large category, there were 21 dogs while in the small category, there were 12. The show was judged by Dr. Anandmai Kundu, Principal Scientist, HOD, Animal Science Division, CIARI, Dr. Vetrimalai, Private Practioner and Smti Aparna Singh, Co-ordinator, Animal Welfare Board of India, Port Blair.

 

        The criteria for judging the show included the breed characteristics, colour of coat and its texture, hair, health condition, pedigree records as well as vaccination status and training. Prizes will be awarded to the first three winners under both the categories during the closing ceremony of ITF.
