LG inaugurates International Standard Passenger Hall at Haddo Wharf

Calls for proper maintenance and cleanliness of the asset

A passenger hall of International Standard with all modern facilities has come up at Haddo Wharf. The Lt Governor, Lt Gen (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM today inaugurated the hall by unveiling the plaque. The 1200 passenger capacity hall has all required facilities such as medical checking, child care facilities, ATM room, separate Lounge for Cabin and Bunk passengers, Cafeteria, Immigration checking, fire detection, VIP Lounge, and pre-paid taxi facilities.

Speaking on the occasion, the Lt Governor expressed happiness that a modern passenger hall of international standard has been constructed at Haddo Wharf for the benefit of passengers availing ship journey. He stated that during the 2004 tsunami, port structures in the Islands suffered severe damages including this passenger hall, which was completely destroyed by the massive earthquake of 2004. In order to assess the extent of damages, a High Level Committee comprising experts from IIT, Chennai and IIT Roorkee was constituted. After examining various aspects, the Committee suggested for construction of a new Passenger Hall instead of repairing the damaged hall.

He further laid emphasis on proper maintenance and cleanliness of the newly created asset and urged upon all availing the facilities for keeping the passenger hall and other such facility neat and clean. “It is the people of the Islands, who will be using such facilities, therefore, they should consider this facility as their own property and strive to keep all such assets neat and clean” he said. He further directed the Port and Shipping Departments to provide basic amenities like water, toilets, seating arrangements in all the ports/jetties across the Islands which are being used by the public.

In his address, the Member of Parliament, Shri B. P. Ray urged that full proof screening system must be installed in the jetty so that proper screening of baggages and containers can be done to ensure no illegal materials get into the Islands from outside.

The Chief Engineer, ALHW, Shri K. Shekar gave the technical details of the passenger hall.

Earlier, welcoming the chief guest and others, the Principal Secretary (Shipping) Shri Jalaj Shrivastava informed that the passenger hall was completed within a period of 18 months. The function concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by the Chief Port Administrator, PMB, Captain Ashwani Kumar.
