Delegation of Ex-servicemen settlers meets LG

LG writes to Punjab CM for medical seats

 

 Port Blair, June 20: A delegation of ex-servicemen settlers from Campbell Bay met the Lt Governor, Lt General (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM today at Raj Niwas and informed him that when the prospective students from Campbell Bay went to Chandigarh they found that the reservation under Tsunami victim quota had been removed from the prospectus and thus they will not be given the MBBS and BDS seats. These seats were earmarked by the Government of Punjab under the Tsunami victim quota after the devastating tsunami struck the Islands on 26th December 2004.

 

        The Lt Governor, Lt General (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM has accordingly written a detailed letter to Shri Parkash Singh Badal, Chief Minister, Punjab for restoration of the MBBS and BDS seats for a period of at least two years by which time the Medical College in the Islands is likely to be set up. The Lt Governor has sought immediate intervention of the Chief Minister for a direction to the State Health Department to restore the seats for the benefit of the students of the remote Islands.

        Under the influence of moderate to strong Southwest Monsoon current, strong Southwesterly wind speed exceeding 45 Kmph and generally rough seas likely along and off Andaman & Nicobar coast. Fishermen are advised to be cautious while venturing into the sea. Implementation of agri. schemes reviewed

 

        The Secretary (Agriculture), Shri S.N. Misra chaired a meeting with the Director and Joint Directors and Senior officers of the Agriculture Department on 19th June 2013 in the conference hall of the Directorate of Agriculture to review the functioning of the department.

 

        Shri. M.A. Salam, Director of Agriculture welcomed the Secretary (Agri) and gave a brief account of the various developmental activities undertaken by the department. The Secretary (Agri) discussed in depth regarding the various schemes and their mode of implementation by the department. He suggested that documentation and analysis of the data recorded for the area under organic farming, yield of different crops etc to compare with the inputs procured and issued to farmers.

 

        The Secretary (Agri) emphasized that a strategy has to be created to get proper feedback from the extension functionaries regarding the impact of implementation of various programmes and also the location specific needs of the farmers for proper planning. He also suggested that the activities on value addition and fruit preservation should be initiated as a flagship programme and more awareness has to be created on this aspect.

 

 

 

 

 

 

S&L shows to remain suspended from July 1

 

        The Sound and Light system at Cellular Jail is being technically upgraded through India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) Ltd. The Sound and Light shows shall remain suspended for three weeks tentatively w.e.f. 01.07.2013 due to the ongoing upgradation of the system.
