Naval ships help carry stranded passengers

from Port Blair/Hut Bay

Port Blair, May 23: Due to adverse weather conditions, the normal shipping services from Port Blair to Hut Bay had to be suspended on 21st & 22nd May 2015. The scheduled ships to Hut Bay which sailed on 21st & 22nd of May had to abandon their voyage half way and returned back to Port Blair. This had led to passengers getting stranded at Port Blair and Hut Bay. On the directions of the Hon’ble Lt Governor, the Director of Shipping Services then sought the assistance of Andaman Nicobar Command to help evacuate passengers from Port Blair and Hut Bay. The ANC immediately accepted the request in ferrying the passengers at both the points. With the help of the Command, special sorties were conducted by naval ships and 424 stranded passengers from Port Blair were carried to Hut Bay on the morning of 23rd May and the naval ships will return back to Port Blair with around 300 stranded passengers from Hut Bay on the early hours of 24th May 2015. The normal shipping services in this route is likely to be resumed with effect from 24th May.

The Director of Shipping Services has expressed his gratitude to the ANC for their help.
