Gazal & Sufi Nite by Sudeep Banerjee

 

        Noted gazal singer Sudeep Banerjee mesmerized the audience by presenting some splendid gazals at Island Tourism Festival ground here this evening as part of the two-day cultural festival ‘Virasat’ organized by the Department of Art & Culture in association with INTACH, Cultural Organizations, East Zone Cultural Centre and Department of Tourism and supported by Indian Oil Corporation.

 

        The Lt Governor, Lt Gen A.K. Singh (Retd) graced the occasion as the chief guest and inaugurated the programme by lighting the traditional oil lamp.

         

        Sudeep Banerjee started with a gazal ‘Kal choudhavi ki raat thi...... and continued with gazals such as Hoshwallon ko khabar kya’……. ‘Tum itna kyon muskura rahe ho’ accompanied by Shankar Nandi on tabla, Manas on Keyboard and Shoumik Deb on Guitar much to the delight of the audience.

 

        Ms Samhita Veda Acharya briefly informed the gathering on the occasion that Indian National Trust for Art & Culture-Heritage (INTACH) is observing World Heritage Week for the revival of traditional music.

 

        Hon’ble Members of Public Accounts Committee and Estimate Committee of Puducherry Legislative Assembly, Chief Secretary, Shri Anand Prakash, Chairperson PBMC, Shri Arumugam also graced the programme.

 

        In the first part of the programme, the artistes from these Islands presented songs and dances. The artistes from Gauri Shankar Classical Dance Academy, Kailashpati Classical Dance Academy, Pragati social cultural organization, Sharmishta Music centre group and Dance Nritya Academy presented classical and fusion dances. Kasheesh, a socio-cultural organization presented a Sangeet Rupak titled ‘Hum Bhi’ which depicted the freedom struggle history of isles, its development post independence and the present unity and diversity. The flea market at the venue was an added attraction at the festival. People were seen attracted to the products put on sale by the entrepreneurs. Food stall owners missed no opportunity in serving delicacies to the visitors.
