Press Release

This is with reference to the news item published in local daily stating that Inter Ministerial Central Team of Govt. of India was not satisfied with the preparedness level of Disaster Management in the Union Territory. The content in the news item is quite contrary to the views expressed by the team during their visit to these Islands.

“The team was of the opinion that the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) is the best Emergency Operation Centre in India as of now. The team was also impressed by the excellent practical work done in the field of Disaster Management. The team also expressed its desire to allow learning visits from other States to these Islands.”

The team visited the State Emergency Operation Centre and vulnerable areas of South Andaman and N&M Andaman and also held interaction with officers at field. The team also examined the recent initiatives of the Administration in launching Community Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) programme which will culminate in a period of three years. This programme is a structured and focused approach, targeting disaster preparedness at the grass root level. The team was further apprised that 198 numbers of mock drills, awareness, sensitization, workshops, trainings etc. programmes have been conducted so far. The Team was appreciative of the coverage of all schools in the Union Territory under National School Safety Programme.

In order to strengthen the resilience of the Islands towards better preparedness, the team decided to take up with Govt. of India for early setting up of Doppler, Weather Radar (DWR), release of funds for Disaster Response and creation of new posts for Emergency Operation Centres (EOCs).

The Hon’ble Lt. Governor has also requested the team to arrange an external audit of our disaster preparedness so that shortcomings, if any, can be corrected/made up.
