Inter Zonal State Level Football Tournament gets underway

LG stresses for improving football standard in isles

 

          Port Blair, July 30: Govt. SS School, Malacca, Car Nicobar defeated Govt. SS School, Hut Bay, Little Andaman by 1-0 score in a scintillating opening match of the Inter Zonal State Level Football tournament held at Netaji Stadium, Port Blair. The only goal came in the extra time as both the teams could not score any goal in the stipulated time. The four day tournament was kicked off at Netaji Stadium today with a formal inauguration, by the Lt Gen (Retd) A K Singh, Lt Governor of A&N Islands. The Lt Governor hoisted the sports flag and declared the tournament open. He also released a technical bulletin-“Road to Subroto Mukherjee Football Cup” on the occasion.

 

        In his brief address, the Lt. Governor conveyed his best wishes to all the participating teams and advised them to play the game in the true spirit of sportsmanship. Games not only entertain but also build character of an individual and keep a person physically fit, the Lt Governor added. Underlining the need for improving the standard of football in the Islands, the Lt Governor observed that the level of football in the Islands has gone down and such tournaments will hone the playing skills of the players. 

 

        Earlier, a pledge ceremony was held wherein participating players took oath to observe true spirit of sportsmanship and discipline.

 

        Secretary (Sports), Shri Devinder Singh, in his welcome address said that this is a very prestigious tournament in which 26 teams from zones, covering from Campbell Bay to Diglipur are participating. The tournament will be held in three different categories viz. Under-14 (Boys), Under-17 (boys) and Under-17 (Girls). The winning school team will participate in the Subroto Mukherjee Football Cup Tournament scheduled to be held at New Delhi from 16th September to 17th October 2014.

 

        A cultural programme was presented by the students of Govt. SS School, Bhatubasti on the occasion. The four day tournament will culminate on 2nd August 2014.
