LG approaches HRD Ministry for additional NIT seats

        Lt Gen (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM, Lt.  Governor, Andaman and Nicobar Islands has requested the Union Minister of Human Resource Development to reserve atleast 60 seats exclusively for the students of the islands in various NITs across the country from the academic year 2012-13 onwards.  Prior to 2010-11, Ministry had been reserving 44 supernumerary seats for the islands.  However, after the establishment of new NIT with an intake of 90 seats at Puducherry, 50% of the seats i.e.  45 seats were earmarked for the students of these islands and  Puducherry combined.   During the last year, out of this 50% Home Quota, only 12 seats were allotted to the islands initially on the basis of combined merit list of the A&N Islands and Puducherry.  The Lt. Governor has, therefore, approached the Ministry to exclusively reserve 60 seats as the students of islands cannot compete on merit with the mainland students due to remoteness of the islands where high quality teaching facility is not available in such a challenging and difficult environment.  On the other hand, there are large number of potential candidates who aspire to pursue engineering courses and as such there is a need for increasing the number of NIT seats exclusively for students of these remote islands.

        The Union Minister of Human Resource Development has informed the Lt. Governor that the request of the Administration is being examined, keeping in view the above aspects.

LG mourns the tragedy;

Sanctions ex-gratia relief

        Lt Gen (Retd) Bhopinder Singh, PVSM, AVSM, Lt. Governor, Andaman and Nicobar Islands has deeply mourned the untimely demise of eleven persons in an unprecedented tragedy on 28 May 2012.   Local non-mechanised boat carrying 15 persons capsized in the high seas during inclement weather conditions.  They were going for the picnic through creek to Kurmachad at 0800 hrs.  Kurmachad is near the mouth of the creek. Generally the creek area is safe but due to extremely rough weather the accident occurred.  At around 1100 hrs boat capsized and all the 15 people fell into the sea.  Four people swam across and could reach the shore safely.  A boy who survived reached the main habitation and informed others. Then the people intimated the accident at Police Outpost, Kishorinagar at around 1915 hrs.  The rescue team was immediately sent.  Search and rescue team under SHO, Kalighat went to the place of the accident in RIB boat.  They ventured into the sea and conducted the search and rescue operation. The Andaman Police with concerted effort was able to recover 10 bodies which were buried on 30th May.

        The Lt. Governor has also sanctioned one lakh rupees each to the next of kin of the deceased.

MESSAGE

        I am happy to know that the Andaman and Nicobar Administration is observing Anti-Malaria Month during June 2012. The main aim of Anti-Malaria Month is to bring about sustainable changes in the behaviour of the community towards the prevention and control of malaria by undertaking extensive behaviour change communication campaign for augmenting awareness among the target population. Inter-sectoral co-ordination and active co-operation of various Government Departments and Voluntary Agencies is essential to achieve overall reduction of malaria in this territory.

        I appeal to all the people, Government Departments, Municipal Council, PRls, Voluntary Organisations, Mahila Mandals etc to extend their wholehearted support to the Directorate of Health Services to fulfill the objective of curtailing malaria and other vector borne diseases.

        I wish this endeavour all the success.
